the broken vessel

I was really excited for conference this session, I love hearing what messages the prophets are inspired to deliver to us. I was particularly touched by Elder Holland's talk "Like a Broken Vessel". He spoke to those affected by depression, or suffering from any mental ailment really, but on a level that applied to every single one of us.

After Emmetts tramautic birth, I suffered (still do- though thankfully not as bad) with anxiety/post traumatic stress. We've already discussed my horrific surgery, which was just the tip of the iceberg.  My mind was placed on such a high alert, where it feared for life or death (for Emmett) on a daily (hourly) basis, for an extended period of time. It hit a peak one horrible, heartbreaking afternoon where I witnessed him stop breathing and his heart stop. I sat there not breathing myself, as an entire team surrounded his bed and miraculously resusitated him. His nurse described it as "pulling him back from heaven by his toes." I had never in my life felt so much gratitude, but the blow left me wounded. I couldn't stop crying for hours, and from that moment my brain was constantly preparing itself for the chance it happened again. This intese, wracking worry never ceased for the 96 days he was in the NICU. And when he came home with oxygen and monitors, my mind stayed in hyper-mode.

A year later, when all traces of the NICU were gone, and my mind couldn't pull itself out of panic - I knew I needed help. The mind is a tricky thing, and one major contributor to my anxiety was blame. I felt horrible watching him suffer through countless situations, knowing the reason he was there was because my body couldn't keep him inside. I wondered if I could have changed anything. I had a deep rooted fear that something out of my control would come and take him from me. At this point it wasn't just fears related to his breathing. It was ANYTHING that posed a threat to him. I still fight this fear off.

Elder Holland described it so well:

"The Book of Mormon says Ammon and his brethren were depressed at a very difficult time,2 and so can the rest of us be. But today I am speaking of something more serious, of an affliction so severe that it significantly restricts a person’s ability to function fully, a crater in the mind so deep that no one can responsibly suggest it would surely go away if those victims would just square their shoulders and think more positively—though I am a vigorous advocate of square shoulders and positive thinking!
No, this dark night of the mind and spirit is more than mere discouragement."

I never told anyone this. It took me probably almost two years to even tell Jared. I kept hoping it would go away, and wasn't sure if the fears I had were normal "mom worries". Aside from that, I literally could not talk about it. I couldn't even THINK about it. My mind had taken those six months of my life, boxed them up, and buried them down far enough that they wouldn't hurt me. To try to touch that box was too painful, too much for my mind to tolerate. So it just sat there, the walls around it growing thicker and thicker.

Choosing to talk to someone about it was one of the best things I've done. I'm proud I forced myself to open the box back up, no matter how painful it was. The very first time was like pulling teeth but it got easier and easier and I actually came to look forward to it.

Elder Holland went on to say:

Though we may feel we are “like a broken vessel,” as the Psalmist says,10 we must remember, that vessel is in the hands of the divine potter. Broken minds can be healed just the way broken bones and broken hearts are healed

What peaceful, comforting words :)

I have mentioned more than once on this blog what a trial of faith my second pregnancy was. Now you understand a little more fully. I was willingly placing myself back in the situation I had buried so far away. Facing down the demons that still haunted me. And still, my BIGGEST fear was the same it had always been: something out of my control (pre-eclampsia) hurting Emmett (this time by taking me from him). Though chances were small and I was in good hands, I couldn't bear that thought.

Elder Holland included a quote from a talk given by President Monsen.

“That love never changes. … It is there for you when you are sad or happy, discouraged or hopeful. God’s love is there for you whether or not you feel you deserve [it]. It is simply always there.”4

If anyone reading this feels sad or discouraged, I hope you know you are not alone. We are never alone, even in our darkest moments. That is one thing I've always been sure of.

the most precious gift

Of all the gifts I received this Christmas, there is one that stands out the most. It's the one that has the most meaning, and the one I'm sure I will cherish for years to come. This one came from Santa, and is something I've been wanting for a long time :)

Everytime I look at it, it brings tears to my eyes. Something inside me is stirred up - because I'd seen this image countless times in my head before I ever laid eyes on this painting.

During the many sleepless nights, as I prayed with all my might before falling asleep, this is the answer I would receive. Emmett was in the best hands possible. His every step, movement, and breath was being watched over. And someday soon, he would be the miraculous perfect, healthy boy I dreamed of.

When the pokes, procedures, and frights were too much to bear - again this image flashed into my mind. "I am with him", I heard.

What makes this painting even more special, is the inscription in the corner. It is a symbol to me that this picture is and always will be for Emmett. As he gets older, it will be a reminder to him of where he   came from, how many obstacles he overcame, and how it was all possible.

I'd love to someday have a giant version of this painting, but this one (as it says) belongs to Emmett.

It touched my heart to read the special note the artist had included with the picture:
"My paintings in many ways record what is most important to me: my feelings and experiences with family and friends along with the spiritual aspects of my life. My hope is that in these images you will find something familar, something which will resonate and remind you of what is most important in your own life."

Indeed it has. I am so grateful for my life's countless blessings. And humbled by the realization that the Lord is truly next to each of us every moment, guiding us by the hand.

Sayonara NICU!!

Finally the day arrived!! It felt so surreal. I told Jared on our drive over there that I felt like I did the morning of our wedding - Giddy with excitement over this life-changing event I knew was taking place. Butterflies were having a hayday in my stomach. I knew our lives would be different from that day forward and I couldn't be happier about it. I spent 93 LONG DAYS trekking back and forth to the hospital and crossing day by day off the calendar. I had my share of sleepless, nervous wreck nights where I broke down and called the nurse at 2 in the morning to check how Emmett was doing. Now that he's home my nights are still sleepless, but in a much happier, satisfying way! It actually makes me appreciate when he wakes up at 3 am crying to be fed.

Here's a picture I took of Jared holding Emmett our last night there. I love his clear, sparkling eyes! That look just makes my heart melt!

Emmett's last feeding at the hospital!!

The Happy Family

All loaded up and headed for the door!

This is Carly, one of our favorite NICU nurses. Yes, I look like a giant next to her. Haha. She took great care of Emmett and we are SO thankful for her and ALL our amazing nurses and doctors. All of them have played such a major role in our lives and we will never forget them.

Sleepover at the NICU

1 day before Emmett came home, we had a "trial run" to get us comfortable with his home oxygen and monitors. We got to sleep over at the NICU in this special "sleep room" created for parents. They wheeled his crib in with us, and I was so excited to have him lying next to us all night long. I just kept looking over at his crib and smiling.
It was also our first night taking care of him all by ourselves. He did really well and only woke up about three or four times. I think we did pretty good for our first time too! Don't mind the pajama/no makeup pictures, I just wanted to document this memorable night!

We thought it was a pretty quaint little room!

My Hollywood Baby

Give this baby a role! As you can see by the many faces of Mr. Emmett, he has quite the range of emotions already! You name it, he's got it...

Little Gruntsworth

Emmett has a newfound love of grunting. He grunts when he eats, grunts when he wants his binki, grunts when he wants his diaper changed, grunts when you pick him up, and grunts when he sleeps. haha.
I've been pretty bad at updating the blog lately, but its hard to stay focused when I have the worlds cutest baby to spend all my time with! Emmett has grown and progressed by leaps and bounds in the past few weeks!

  • Moved back to his big boy bed (This is what it looks like)
  • Drank from a bottle for the first time (and drained every last drop!) It's a process that involves ME learning to feed him, as much as it is HIM learning to eat. Feeding a Preemie is a lot different than feeding a normal baby! It's pretty intensive and a little nervewracking, but I'm quickly becoming a pro!
I love this picture because he's looking at me like "Mom, I'm not sure about this..." LOL
  • Hit five pounds (and is well on his way to 6! Last night he weighed in at 5 pds, 12.5 ounces)
  • Met Aunt Kaity, Kirsten, Kendall, and Sarah for the first time
  • Took his first ride in a swing and loved it!
  • Had a surgery to repair his hernias, and did awesome! Practically every preemie boy develops a hernia when they're term, so now that Emmetts is taken care of, its one step closer to the door!
  • Had his first picture taken with the Easter Bunny!

It's kind of a scary looking Easter Bunny, but how adorable is it anyway?!

Meanwhile, I have been working like crazy to get everything ready and prepared for the day he comes home! It's not an easy thing to prepare for your first baby with no baby shower! (If you want to visit Emmett's virtual shower it's http://www.ericksonshower.blogspot.com/) For everyone that has already donated or sent a gift, thank you SO much!! You have no idea how much it is appreciated! :-)
I am so proud of the way his room is turning out, and it's far from done! I'll give you a peek at it's progress though!
And check out this adorable bedding!

Emmett's feeding is the only thing left keeping him in the NICU!!  He is currently taking about 3 bottles a day. They will eventually increase it to 4, and after that they'll give him a 24 hour period to wake up and request a bottle on his own (instead of their scheduled feeding times). If he requests a bottle as many times a day as he needs to, he's FINALLY COMING HOME!!! We're hoping this process takes about 2 weeks. Let the countdown begin!!!

Emmett's Fashion Show

So have I told you how excited I am that Emmett is wearing clothes?! We have been given some preemie clothes from friends and family (thanks guys!) and they fit Emmett perfectly! He looks SO adorable in them. And he even indulges me and lets me take pictures in each new ensemble :-). There will be many more to come!

Didn't I tell you he's getting smarter with his hands? Look at him holding in his own binki! haha. He was a little unsure of what to do with the right one, so he resorted to grabbing his ear.

Notice he has no more tube coming out of his mouth and or tape above his lip? Wahoo! And lastly I will leave you with a couple pictures of his cute little face! (Disclaimer: These were before the tube/tape removal, its even cuter without them!!!)
Until next time! I'm working on next weeks fashion schedule already!

Latest Haps

Emmett turned 2 Months old yesterday! Here are some bullets of his latest progress:
  • Moved into a big boy bed! (open crib), but got a little sick and got put back into the isolette. Probably will return to his crib really soon.
  • Wore clothes for the first time (cutest thing I've ever seen!)
  • Made it off the ventilator and back onto the CPAP
  • Now eating "full feeds" for his current weight
  • Switched from CPAP to NASAL CANNULA!!! (Can you tell I'm SO excited? He's practically breathing on his own! I was so happy that day I cried!)
  • Makes cute little baby/grunting noises while he's sucking on his binki
  • Eyes were checked again and they are vascularized! The Doctor doesn't even have to look at them again while he's in the NICU!
  • Had his Broviac (central line) removed
  • Smiled for the first time (He was just sleeping, but it was the first time I've seen a real smile on that adorable little face!)
  • Still LOVES being held. His little hands are getting smarter and he loves to reach up and hold pieces of my hair. The other day the nurse tried to come get him and put him back in bed, but we could not get him to release his death grip on my hair! It cracked me up. It was if he was saying "If you wanna take me away from my mom, you're gonna have to pry her from my kung fu grip!" lol. He ended up with a couple pieces of my hair...

Lovebug

My little Emmett is growing up right before my eyes! Every day he gets stronger and stronger (and bigger and bigger! yay!) He is such a little love and is the BEST snuggler! He LOVES to snuggle. The nurses joke that I need to become to human incubator and just sit there around the clock...which I wouldn't have a problem with. He knows his mommy, and he is even starting to know the times that I'm supposed to come and hold him. If I don't show up on time, he lets everyone know it!There's no pulling the wool over his eyes!

We have ridden quite the roller coaster in the past couple weeks. It can be so up and down from one day to the next, and I don't know if I can handle any more "down" days. I love him so, so much and it is the hardest thing I've ever had to do to watch him go through so much and feel so completely powerless. Sometimes I just want to run and grab him in my arms and cuddle him until he gets better. If only it were that easy... Our latest hurdle is getting the breathing and eating down simultaneously. It is hard for babies (especially babies that have tubes down their throats) to swallow milk without any getting down into their airways. Unfortunately Emmett has had trouble with that a couple times, and it was incredibly scary.

Now let's focus on the "up" parts of the roller coaster. Here are some milestones of progress Emmett has made in the past few weeks:

  • Hit 4 pounds, and is currently well on his way to 5! (Last night he was 4 pds, 5 ounces)
  • Had his little waterbed taken out (progress towards maintaining his own body temp)
  • Had his first eye check (it looked good)
  • Had his first swaddle bath in a real bathtub! (he loved it!)
  • Had a Broviac put in (a central line that was put into his chest so he won't have to continually be poked anymore. Not exactly a milestone, but a big event nonetheless.
  • Opens his eyes more often. Seems more awake and alert, and focuses in on Jared and I.
  • His bed has been moved to a corner right next to a window, and my siblings have finally been able to look at him! It was so cute to watch all their faces as the nurses held him up.
Lastly I will leave you with pictures of his latest adventures! Stay tuned for updates!

After his bath, Jared combed his hair into the worlds tiniest mohawk! Cutest thing EVER!
Did you think it was possible for our baby to have hair that light?! I didn't!

I love this picture because it looks like he's smiling! He loves his binki!
